The Villain’s White Halo v 2 & 3 by Hao Da Yi Juan Wei Sheng Zhi

Finished September 7, 2026

Pretty quick and easy read. The short chapters work in its favor because it’s too easy to say “just one more chapter” and then you’ve done another five. I really liked the first volume, or liked it enough, anyway. By the end of the second I wasn’t all that excited about starting the third but I wanted to wrap it up. By the end of the third I was glad it was over.

There wasn’t anything “wrong” with it, exactly. Sometimes our protagonist seemed a little bit out of character, but whatever. The reveal wasn’t that much a of a reveal but I think that was intentional.

I think the problem is that in my case, The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System was the first danmei I ever read and therefore also the first transmigration novel. And so I compare every other transmigration danmei to that and SVSSS still reigns supreme. (Especially when there are similar character types/similar significant plot elements and you can’t help but compare.)

That’s not to say this wasn’t worth a read. I did grab some quotes. The return of Wei Jingfeng the Sword Sage was great. What a fun guy:

“Shifu, don’the you cultivate to pursue immortality?”

Of the millions of cultivators in the world, their goals mainly culminated in achieving formidable power supreme status, and long life.

“I first started cultivating because I enjoyed it. The art of the sword itself is interesting. Later, it was to live freely. As for immortality? That never crossed my mind… Caring too much about that stuff ruins the fun. Die on the road, bury me by the road. Die in a ditch, bury me in a ditch. If wild dogs eat me, at least I’ll have a flesh coffin…”

And the girls continue to have the best lines, even if they’re all about chicken:

He Yanyun, seeing him fall silent, seemed to read his thoughts. “When I was little, I often wanted to sneak down the mountain for roast chicken. But I was scared Xiaolian would tease me for being such a glutton, so I didn’t dare tell her and resisted the urge. One day, though, I finally couldn’t take it anymore and confessed. Turns out, she’d been craving it too! We went down the mountain that very night and feasted. Since then, I learned that food in your mouth is what’s real. Shame is a waste of time!”

And He Yanyun and Ruan Xiaolian talking about their friend:

“How did she fall so hard so fast? She’s writing like it’s a done deal, like she won’t marry anyone else. There hasn’t been any sign of this before, right? Is it the fashionable thing to do great things in secret nowadays? Like my shixiong and Yin-shixiong, who registered their union without a word?”

Ruan Xiaolian set down the brush, rolled up the letter, tucked it into a bamboo tube, and secured it around the leg of a blue bird.

“Luo-shixiong and Yin-shixiong had special circumstances. At their cultivation level, many of their decisions are beyond our understanding… As for Duiyan, you know she’s always been impatient. Maybe I should send her some glutinous rice chicken wrapped in a nice big lotus leaf. She might forget about marriage after eating it.”

He Yanyun considered the idea. “Nah, don’t. I actually hope she gets married soon. That way, with four of us, we can play mahjong…”

“You just don’t want me to send her the chicken because then you won’t get to eat it, right?”

“Yes, exactly!

I said I was glad when the final volume was over but I will say that the considerable extras did save the whole experience. And if I recall…none of them were about the main pairing.

So maybe the issue here is the secondary (and tertiary) characters started to outshine the leads.

Rating: Overall, probably about 3.75 stars.
