The Villain’s White Halo v 1 by Hao Da Yi Juan Wei Sheng Zhi

It’s been a minute since I’ve read a cultivation style danmei so it took me a little bit to get back into it but this book was fun. Nothing too stressful or complicated; just kind of an “along for the ride” vibe. Humorous and plenty entertaining but maybe not quite as funny as it tries to be. Perhaps the perfect example of this while also the best synopsis:
My name is Yin Biyue. I am a villain. I love cultivation, sword practice, critical thinking, and not caring. I am a man who will become the ultimate villain. You can insult me, but you can’t insult my life’s goal. You can question me, but you cannot question my professionalism. The protagonist has a winning cheat code—wherever he wants to go, the world must yield the way. I have a fiendish villain halo—I can kill gods and obliterate the divine in my way.
I am Yin Biyue, and I approved this message.
Bleh, that was so corny!
Much to my own surprise, my favorite excerpt in the book actually came from the girls, talking about love:
“But confessing is so hard. My mom succeeded on her first try, so why do I keep getting rejected?”
He Yanyun gave her a hearty pat on the shoulder.
“What’s the big deal? I used to have a crush on Luo-shixiong, but I realized later that… It’s like when you see a flower and you think it’s pretty, so you want to own it. You really only like the way it looks. It’s a form of admiration, not love.”
Ruan Xiaolian resonated deeply with that sentiment. “When I was little, I wanted to marry the chef at the roasted chicken shop down the mountain. I just liked the way he cooked chicken. That’s not love either.”

Rating: 4 stars though it retrospect should probably be about 3.8. But I ordered the next two volumes so we’ll see.
